Beware HMRC Scams!!

Some of our members have recently received an email purportedly from HMRC informing them that they are due an income tax rebate.  There are a number of links on the email asking the receiver to create a Government Gateway account, how to start a claim and details of the rebate.  THIS IS A PHISHING SCAM EMAIL and is NOT from HMRC.  If anyone receives something similar the advice is NOT to click on any of the links and to delete it immediately.

Further details of this scam can be found on the Hoaxslayer website at www.hoax-slayer.com

Further to this, one of our members received an automated telephone call on 28.10.2016, again allegedly from HMRC, to the effect that they were taking court action against him and asked him to press '1' on his phone keypad.  Enquiries with HMRC confirms this is definitely a scam.  A quick look on the internet shows that Cheshire Police received 10 reports of similar activity on 25/10/2016, where in one case a person was informed they would be arrested if they did not pay an outstanding tax bill of £500.  HMRC do NOT operate in this way about any penalty or rebate due.  If you receive such a call the advice is NOT to press '1', terminate the call and to contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via their website at www.actionfraud.police.uk
